The Centre actively supports initiatives that align with its mission of fostering African development and today in Abuja, APDC's Managing Director, Dr. Chiji Ojukwu, played a key role in a critical discussion on Public Procurement & Good Governance in Nigeria.
Co-organized by prestigious institutions like the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings, Stellenbosch University, the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA) and the African Procurement Law Unit (APLU), the event brought together leading experts. The discussion focused on strengthening procurement frameworks, promoting gender inclusivity, and enhancing transparency in Nigeria's public procurement.
Dr. Ojukwu's contributions went beyond chairing the panel session, titled "Transparency of Public Procurement in Nigeria." Drawing on his experience at the AfDB as a former Task Manager, Manager and later Director at the Bank, he emphasized the importance of clear and established procurement policies and rules of procedures, along the procurement value chains, starting from design of the procurement plan to advertisement, bidding, evaluation, selection, contract and dispute management. He argued that such frameworks are essential for ensuring responsible use of public funds.
This discussion signifies a growing recognition in Nigeria: responsible public spending practices are critical. By prioritizing transparency, clear frameworks, and gender equality, Nigeria can ensure its procurement processes deliver optimal value for its citizens, ensuring fairness, value for money and efficiency. This, in turn, fosters good governance and paves the way for a more equitable, gender inclusive and prosperous future.
